Happy Fall!

The Old Grove Festival was a great success. The theater was full with about 500 patrons, sponsors and volunteers who made the evening truly enjoyable. The Mighty Chiplings put on a great opening act and the Best Intentions were really incredible. The crowd had a great time dancing and singing to the sounds of Motown. The great BBQ feast was tasty and our guests enjoyed premium beer and wine donated by many wineries and Lagunitas brewery. This event would not be possible each year without the help of our volunteers, team leaders, Stewards' and park staff and our wonderful festival producers Kathy and Jim Ocean. Thank you to everyone for your support!

I also want to thank our top level sponsors Russian River Getaways, Affinity Solar, Russian River Rec and Park and many others. The funds raised will help support our education and stewardship volunteer programs and our efforts to keep our parks open.

bridgeI am very pleased to report that our most recent fundraising events and donations from our supporters have helped us reach our $50,000 Giving Tree Challenge. Thank you to everyone who supported this effort. More funding is needed to help us keep Austin Creek State Recreation Area and other areas of Sonoma Coast open. We are working on new strategies to help us reach this goal.

I want to take this opportunity to encourage you all to support events taking place in other State Parks near us and the organizations that are working to keep them open. I've listed a few opportunities below.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather that Sonoma County offers us each year. Even though the campgrounds in Austin Creek are closed you can still enjoy the trails in this very special park.

My best,

michele

California State Park Poster Series

bridgeCalifornia State Parks are an enduring symbol of our state's history and legacy. To celebrate these priceless treasures, Folk4Parks.org, a net-roots organization fighting for CA Parks, has just announced they are commissioning a new, collectable series of illustrated posters, commemorating the California State Park system. All artwork in the series will be inspired by the Art Nouveau period of the early 20th century, a reminder of a time in California history when our parks grew and prospered. All posters are 12″ x 17″, aqueous-color prints on premium recycled paper.

Jenner Headlands Hike

October 8, 2011 - 10:00 t0 3:30, Free, bring a lunch. Registration required.

headlands

The hike will take place along the coastal headlands of the property. This strenuous 4.0-mile roundtrip hike will ascend more than 800 feet in elevation.  Along the way, hikers will be greeted with dazzling views of the Sonoma Coast (on clear days!). Some sections of the route are especially rough with uneven footing so please wear sturdy hiking boots. This hike is not for inexperienced hikers — you must be in good physical condition.  Along with the rough terrain comes the varying coastal weather that can bring bright, sunny skies or damp, cold, foggy and windy weather. We highly recommend dressing in layers and including a windbreaker jacket to protect you from the potentially biting coastal winds.
